Matthew 5:43-45 NIV
Love for Enemies
43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor[a] and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.
Back in the Sermon on the Mount, this time from Matthews account.
Jesus reminded those listeners as He reminds us, go against the norm. Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you. As we all know the sun rises for all of us, whether we are evil or good.
It’s so hard to love those enemies that get under our skin. I can think of a situation where I would much rather thump the persons than pray for them. But the passages following this one reminds us there is no reward in loving those who love you, but we are to be perfect as our heavenly Father is perfect. A tall order to say the least, but thankfully, Jesus didn’t leave us empty handed, we have the Holy Spirit to help us.
