2 Corinthians 12:9-10 (NIV)
9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 10 That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
The context of this passage is Paul speaking about his “thorn in the flesh.” And although we do not know exactly what that was, we know Paul prayed, actually he used the word pleaded, three times asking God to take it. Verse 9 was God’s response.
We live in a world where women are told they have to be strong, they have to be self-sufficient, they don’t need a man to help them. Maybe not just women, I think men have the same pressure if not more to be “strong.” Yet here God reminds us that His grace is all we need. That when we are weak His power can rest on us.
I’m not sure I know how to delight in my weaknesses let alone hardships, persecutions, and difficulties. I do know I need to wrap my brain around the idea that it’s okay to be weak and to let God’s strength take over.
